Scenario #1 – Walking out of a local restaurant with Michele and her daughter, the hostess tells Michele, “Thank you for taking her out” as if she checked me out of a group home. Michele told her “Oh, no… she’s one of my best friends.”
Scenario #2- Deanna works in a professional, non-social services office in the same building as me. Her staff has nothing to do with disability issues. They see me talking to her daily. I asked her if they asked why I talk funny. She defensively said, “They’re not 8!!”
What makes us see people as we do? How are some people prejudice while others seem oblivious to appearances? Just something to ponder.
